Travel to San Diego, USA with Amy Ruttan

San Diego

I went to San Diego California. I flew. It’s quite a bit of a drive from where I live in Canada to San Diego. It’s about a 5 hour flight from Toronto, Ontario. If you drive it turns into 40 hours of driving, not that I wouldn’t mind the drive. I prefer driving over flying, but I was on a time crunch.

I had a good experience. I was there for business. I was attending the Romance Writer’s of America national conference. It’s one of my favourite conferences. So much information and it’s amazing to meet people who you interact with daily, but just online. I loved the city. The weather in July was beautiful. I wish I could’ve stayed longer. Wonderful place.

My advise: For RWA make sure you talk to people. Don’t hide away in your room. Volunteer, get involved and you’ll make some awesome connections. Do make sure you have down time too, because the pace at RWA can have you tired out by the end. Take Emergen C to avoid the conference crud that inevitably comes with it.

TIPS OR TRICKS: Don’t kill yourself if you can’t make every workshop. If there’s a conflict between two workshops go to the one that’s not recorded and definitely buy the conference recordings. It’s totally worth it and cheaper while you’re there than after the fact. As for San Diego, check out the Coronada and Seaport Village. Both amazing. There’s a lot to do in San Diego and a lot of great places are within walking distance too.

ACCOMODATION: I stayed in the Marriott Marquis by the Marina. It was right close to Seaport Village and overlooked the water. It was a wonderful hotel.

Wow! Thank you Amy for sharing about your trip. I also wanted to go to the RWA conference in San Diego but then for me it would be a eleven hour flight!

Congratulations on the release of your new medical, Alexandro’s Sexy Secret!

Yes! It’s very difficult. This time was easier than my first conference because I was so busy.

I might have stayed at that same hotel, but for a math conference back when I was a professor. Going to a writer’s conference sounds a lot more fun.

Excellent advice! I’m still kicking myself over the fact I didn’t make it to RWA when it was in Orlando, but that was years ago when I was home schooling 3 kids full time and I just couldn’t find a way to make it work. One day, eh?

Hope you make it one day to RWA. It’s amazing. It had been some time since my first one in 2008.
